Supplies Needed to Make Handprint Sunflower Craft

  • Paper towel roll – A paper towel will end up as the stem for your cutie little sunflower. If you don’t have an empty paper towel roll, you can use a sturdy piece of cardboard or a large paint stirrer.
  • Cardstock – You’ll need black, yellow, and green cardstock. Construction paper can be used as well but may not be as sturdy.
  • Scissors – If you’re making this craft with younger children, consider using safety scissors so that they can safely cut out their own shapes.
  • Green paint – A classic darker green color is perfect to use to pain the paper towel roll to look like a stem.

How To Make This Handprint Sunflower

  1. Clean off an empty paper roll and peel off any leftover paper towel pieces. Then paint the paper towel roll completely with green acrylic paint.
  2. While the paint dries, trace four handprints onto yellow cardstock for each sunflower you plan to make.
  3. Cut out the handprints and then cut a circle out of the black cardstock. Once the paint is dry, glue the handprints into a flower shape at one end of the paper towel roll.
  4. Lastly, cut some leaf shapes out of the green card stock and then glue them just below the flower.
  5. Allow all of the glue and paint to dry and then your sunflower is ready to go!

Classroom Use

Read a fun sunflower book, make sunflower themed treats, and even plant sunflower seeds and watch them grow together! Here’s a few cute books that you could include in storytime:

What is the best way to attach the petals and leaves?

You can use a simple craft glue stick to attach the handprint petals and construction paper leaves. Hot glue will also work, but it may leave a little bubble! Glue dots are a great mess free way to easily attach the decorations for your sunflower handprint art.

Pro Tips!

  • Need less mess? Wrap the paper towel roll in green construction paper and secure it tightly with staples or glue dots.
  • Add some glitter or glitter glue to this handprint sunflower to give it extra flair and personality!
  • If you are making this craft with a large group of children, use a permanent marker to label the back of the paper towel stem with each child’s name.
