How to Make Cinnamon Ornaments
The first thing you need to do is prep. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Set sheet pan aside.
In a medium sized mixing bowl add cinnamon and applesauce. Mix with spatula to form a ball. If it’s really crumbly and dry you might need to add 1-2 Tablespoons extra of applesauce.
Place the dough on top of a piece of parchment paper. Then place another piece of parchment paper on top of the dough.
Using a rolling pin roll it out until it’s about a quarter-inch thick.
Cut out the ornaments using cookie cutters. It helps to wiggle the cutter back and forth to separate it from the dough.
Next, take a straw and use it to cut a hole into the top of the ornament where the twine will be placed to hang up your Christmas ornaments.
Place the cinnamon ornaments onto the prepared sheet pan.
Place in oven for two and a half hours or until they are hardened.
Remove ornaments from oven and let cool.
Then tie a piece of twine or ribbon on each ornament and decorate with white puffy paint if desired.
Tips!
- Write the year that you made them on the back of the ornaments with a sharpie if you plan to keep them
- Grab glitter glue and decorate some of the ornaments with that.
- Use colored puffy paints to dress up your ornaments.
- If the edges of your ornaments are rough sand them down with super fine grit sandpaper.
- Did you know you can use your food dehydrator to dry them instead of the oven? Place them on the rack of your dehydrator and dry on the highest setting for 6 hours.
- You can also let them air dry on the baking racks, but it usually takes a few days and works best in dry climates.
FAQs
Store them wrapped in tissue paper in an airtight container safely away from too hot temperatures. I don’t recommend storing these in your garage if you live in a hot area.
How long will these last?
If they’re stored correctly, they can potentially last for years on end. I have a set of these that I made when I was about seven years old. Now inevitably, like any other ornament, they are fragile, so a few might break here and there.
Puffy paint is what I use to decorate my ornaments. It is a craft paint that isn’t thin, so it does not spread a lot. I find this looks most like royal icing on a gingerbread cookie. You can get it at any craft store or right here on Amazon.
Twine is a thicker string that has a very rustic look to it. If you want, you can also string these ornaments up with a thin ribbon. I just personally like the look of the twine with these ornaments. I found mine here on Amazon.
