Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments Ingredients

Ingredients For Cinnamon Ornaments

  • Applesauce – This is the liquid portion for making the dough.
  • Cinnamon – We wouldn’t have cinnamon apple sauce ornaments without the addition of cinnamon! Add a dash of nutmeg or cloves to change it up.

How To Make Cinnamon Ornaments

In a medium sized mixing bowl add cinnamon and applesauce. Mix with spatula to form a ball. If it’s really crumbly and dry you might need to add 1-2 Tablespoons more applesauce.

Place the dough on top of a piece of parchment paper. Then place another piece of parchment paper on top of the dough.

Using a rolling pin, roll it out until it’s about a quarter-inch thick.

Cut out the ornaments using cookie cutters. It helps to wiggle the cutter back and forth to separate it from the dough.

Next, take a straw and use it to cut a hole into the top of the ornament where the twine will be placed to hang up your Christmas ornaments.

Place the cinnamon ornaments onto the prepared baking sheet.

Place in oven for two and a half hours or until they are hardened.

Remove ornaments from oven and let cool.

Tie a piece of twine or ribbon through the whole on each ornament and decorate with white puffy paint or glue if desired.

Pro Tips

  • Write the year that you made them on the back of the ornaments with a sharpie if you plan to keep them.
  • Grab glitter glue and decorate some of the ornaments with that.
  • Use colored puffy paints to dress up your ornaments.
  • If the edges of your ornaments are rough, sand them down with a super fine grit sandpaper.
  • Did you know you can use your food dehydrator to dry them instead of the oven? Place them on the rack of your dehydrator and dry on the highest setting for 6 hours.
  • You can also let them air dry on the baking racks, but it usually takes a few days and works best in dry climates.
  • If your ornament dough is crumbly, it probably needs more applesauce.
  • Even thought these ornaments are non-toxic and made from edible ingredients, they are NOT edible.

Storage

Store cinnamon ornaments wrapped in tissue paper in an airtight container safely away from hot temperatures. I do not recommend storing these in a garage if you live in a hot area. These can last for years when stored correctly but they are fragile so are still quite breakable.

What Is Puffy Paint And Where Do I Get It?

Puffy paint is what I use to decorate my homemade Christmas tree decorations. It is a craft paint that isn’t thin, so it does not spread a lot. I find this looks like royal icing on a gingerbread cookie. You can purchase puffy paint online, get it at any craft store or make it yourself.

Why Did My Cinnamon Ornament Crack?

If the dough is too dry when you roll it out it might crack, and it will bake with the crack showing. When you notice these cracks before baking, rub a little bit of water on them to fill in the crack.

The house is going to smell so good like apple cinnamon while these fun ornaments bake. The kids are going to love cutting out the shapes and decorating these simple yet stylish cinnamon ornaments.
