Supplies for sock puppet craft

  • Sock – Any color sock is great for this craft. I recommend using a crew sock so it is long enough.
  • Cardstock – This can be any color, because you are just using it to make the mouth of the puppet and it will be inside the sock.
  • Ruler – To measure the card stock for the inside of the puppet’s mouth.
  • Scissors – Younger kids may need some help with this.
  • Hot Glue Gun – Older kids and grown ups can be in charge of this part of the craft.
  • Hot Glue Sticks – Always good to have extras on hand. You never know where a project will take you!
  • Pom Poms – These are for the eyeballs, so we use white, but whatever you have on hand can be loads of fun!
  • Googly eyes – Try out different sizes, maybe even mix and match!
  • Yarn – Choose your favorite color for your puppet’s hair.
  • Felt – Use pink felt to create a tongue for your sock puppet. Fabric scraps work in a pinch!

How to make a sock puppet

  • Turn the sock inside out.
  • Cut a 3×3 square from the card stock and fold it in half. Add a small amount of glue along the inside of the folded edge and press it onto the toe area of the sock, allow it to dry for a few minutes.
  • Once dry, carefully flip the sock right side out by sliding your hand into the sock and grasping the card stock. You have formed the puppet’s mouth!
  • Lay the sock flat with the heel facing upward. Glue a pair of googly eyes onto two white pom-poms and leave them to dry. Once dry, attach the pom-poms to the top of the sock using hot glue and set aside to dry.
  • Wrap your favorite color yarn around four fingers about 50 times, then gently slide it off your hand. Tie another piece of yarn tightly around the center to hold it together. Use scissors to cut through the loops of both ends then fluff the strands to creat a fun, textured look. This is your puppet’s hair! Glue the yarn onto the sock, just behind the eyes. Allow a few minutes to dry.
  • Cut a small tongue shape from the pink felt. Attach it to the inside of the puppet’s mouth using hot glue.
  • Let everything dry completely before playing with your new sock puppet!
A group of five colorful sock puppets is displayed on a white marble surface. Each puppet has unique features, including googly eyes, a felt mouth, and yarn hair in vibrant colors like blue, pink, and green. The socks are of different patterns and colors, such as light blue, navy, white, and gray. The puppets have expressive, playful appearances, with some having their tongues sticking out, giving them a fun and whimsical look.

Pro tips

  • If you don’t have googly eyes on hand, break out the tin full of buttons and use those instead.
  • No card stock? No problem! Use a thin piece of cardboard in its place. Cereal boxes work great!
  • For even crazier hair, use two different colors of yarn!

Making sock puppets is such a great rainy day activity. You can even make one for every family member and put on a fun family play!

Instructions

  • Start by turning the sock inside out. Use a ruler to measure the card stock (3×3). Cut the 3-inch by 3-inch square from the card stock and fold it in half. Apply a small amount of hot glue along the inside of the folded edge and press it onto the toe area of the sock. Let it dry for a few minutes. Once the glue is set, slide your hand inside the sock, grasp the card stock, and carefully flip the sock right-side out. This forms the puppet’s mouth.
  • Lay the sock flat with the heel facing upward. Glue a pair of googly eyes onto two white pom-poms and allow them to dry. Once secure, attach the pom-poms to the top of the sock using hot glue. Set aside to dry.
  • Choose your favorite yarn color. Wrap the yarn around four fingers about 50 times, then gently slide it off your hand. Tie another piece of yarn tightly around the center to hold it together. • Cut a small tongue shape from the pink felt. Attach it inside the puppet’s mouth using hot glue. Let everything dry completely before playing with your new sock puppet!
