How to Make Sock Puppets

If your dryer eats socks the way mine does, you’ve got everything you need to make sock puppets. This easy no-sew craft turns those lonely leftover socks into colorful characters with googly eyes, yarn hair, and whatever felt scraps you’ve got rolling around the craft drawer. Forty minutes of crafting and you’ll have a whole cast of characters ready for an impromptu puppet show in the living room.

The puppet is worn on a person's hand, with the sock extending down the wrist. The background is blurred with neutral tones, making the puppet the focal point of the image.

This craft was born out of pure frustration with my laundry room. I swear there’s a portal in there that eats exactly one sock per pair, and for years I was just sadly pitching the widows and widowers. One rainy Saturday afternoon, with three bored kids and a mounting pile of mismatched socks, I had an idea.

I raided the craft drawer.

I pulled out googly eyes, yarn in every color, fabric scraps from a dozen old projects, and a hot glue gun. Within an hour there was a gray puppet with pink hair named “Mr. Floppy,” a rainbow-striped one that became “Sir Fancypants,” and a baby-blue puppet that my youngest insisted on calling “Blueberry” after a fierce debate. The kids spent the rest of the afternoon performing a highly improvised musical in the living room, and I got to sit down with a cup of coffee for the first time all week.

Now every time the dryer claims another sock casualty, it gets added to the “future puppet” drawer instead of the trash. Saturday afternoon with nothing to do? Puppet-making day. Budget-friendly birthday party entertainment? Puppet-making station. A rainy summer week with the cousins in town? Puppet theater. Making no-sew sock puppets is always the answer! This is the craft that just keeps giving and all it costs you is the yarn you already have and the socks you were going to throw out anyway.

Why You’ll Love This Craft

  • This is a simple way to create hours of fun! Kids of all ages can put their creative minds to work with all sorts of ideas for sock puppets.
  • Kids can practice their creativity with different colored yarn, socks and pom-poms to make an eclectic collection of no-sew sock puppets.
  • Sock puppets are ready to practice their puppet show in about 40 minutes, so this is an activity that really keeps kids busy.

Supplies For Sock Puppets

  • Sock – Any color sock is great for this craft. I recommend using a crew sock so it is long enough. Fuzzy socks can make extra hairy looking puppets!
  • Cardstock – This can be any color, because you are just using it to make the mouth of the puppet and it will be inside the sock. If you don’t have any cardstock on hand, just use a piece of cardboard. Cereal box cardboard is great for this craft.
  • Ruler – To measure the card stock for the inside of the puppet’s mouth.
  • Scissors – Younger kids may need some help with this.
  • Hot Glue Gun – Older kids and grown ups can be in charge of this part of the craft. Not loving the idea of kids using hot glue? Use craft or fabric glue and allow for a longer dry time. Fabric tape is also a great kid-friendly alternative.
  • Hot Glue Sticks – Always good to have extras on hand. You never know where a project will take you!
  • Pom Poms – These are for the eyeballs, so we use white, but whatever you have on hand can be loads of fun! Cotton balls, buttons and felt circles work well in place of pom poms.
  • Googly eyes – Try out different sizes, maybe even mix and match! No googly eyes? No problem! Use buttons, instead.
  • Yarn – Choose your favorite color for your puppet’s hair. Ribbon, feathers, strips of fabric or pom poms are fun in place of yarn, too.
  • Felt – Use pink felt to create a tongue for your sock puppet. Fabric scraps work great in a pinch!

How To Make A Sock Puppet

  1. Prepare sock. Turn inside out.
  2. Form mouth. Cut a 3×3 square from the card stock and fold it in half. Add a small amount of glue along the inside of the folded edge and press it onto the toe area of the sock, allow it to dry for a few minutes. Once dry, carefully flip the sock right side out by sliding your hand into the sock and grasping the card stock.
  3. Add eyes. Lay sock flat with the heel facing upward. Glue a pair of googly eyes onto two pom-poms and leave them to dry. Once dry, attach the pom-poms to the top of the sock using hot glue and set aside to dry.
  4. Create hair. Wrap yarn around four fingers about 50 times, then gently slide it off your hand. Tie another piece of yarn tightly around the center to hold it together. Use scissors to cut through the loops of both ends then fluff the strands to create a fun, textured look. Glue the yarn onto the sock, just behind the eyes. Allow a few minutes to dry.
  5. Add tongue. Cut a small tongue shape from the pink felt. Attach it to the inside of the puppet’s mouth using hot glue.
  6. Allow to dry and play! Let everything dry completely before playing with your new sock puppet!

Ways To Use Sock Puppets

  • Play – Put on a puppet show, of course! Create puppets that match a theme and go with it or just go crazy with imagination. Make up sock monsters, animals, royalty, aliens, even family members!
  • Story time helper – With their favorite puppet reading, kids are more likely to pay attention during story time.
  • Emotional regulation – Sock puppets can be a great tool when it comes to emotional regulation. Kids often feel safe chatting about their feelings when there is a little distance, which puppets provide.
  • Build communication skills – These colorful friends are a great way to encourage children to communicate with one another, share and in turn, build their confidence.
  • Fine motor skills – Cutting, glueing and playing with the puppets will help children develop fine motor skills and explore their creativity.
  • Ease transitions – Puppets may help a reluctant toddler get ready for bed, leave the library, or even eat new foods.

Pro Tips

  • For even crazier hair, use two different colors of yarn!
  • Sliding the sock overtop of a jar (jam, pickles etc) can make glueing a little easier.
  • Spot clean only! If you throw your completed sock puppets in the wash, all of their components are likely to fall off (I know this from experience).
  • To store sock puppets with minimal risk of losing their shape, slide them over a cup or mason jar.
A group of five colorful sock puppets is displayed on a white marble surface. Each puppet has unique features, including googly eyes, a felt mouth, and yarn hair in vibrant colors like blue, pink, and green. The socks are of different patterns and colors, such as light blue, navy, white, and gray. The puppets have expressive, playful appearances, with some having their tongues sticking out, giving them a fun and whimsical look.
