Supplies Needed

  • Green cardstock – I love using a light green card stock for this craft so that it shows all of the “ornaments” a little better. But you can use more of a Christmas tree green if you prefer!
  • Pipe cleaners – Glitter pipe cleaners are the way to go with this adorable handprint ornament.
  • Foam stars – Foam stars will act as the tree topper to your Christmas tree ornaments.
  • Sequins – Use sequins of different shapes and sizes to mimic ornaments on your tree.
  • Glue dots – Glue dots are the most mess free way to attach the ornaments and garland to your handprint Christmas ornaments.
  • Toilet paper roll – Paper towel rolls and cardboard will also work in place of a toilet paper roll. You’ll need something like this to be the tree trunk for your Christmas tree.
  • Pencils – Any writing utensil will work, all you need is to trace your hand!
  • Scissors – Consider using safety scissors if you are making this craft with young kiddos.
  • Small pom poms – Along with sequins, these will also mimic ornaments on the Christmas tree.

How to Make Handprint Christmas Tree Ornaments

Begin by folding a toilet paper roll in half and secure it in place with glue dots.

Trace your child’s handprint three times on the green card stock and cut them out.

Build the Christmas tree by overlapping two handprints and glueing them to a toilet paper roll to form a tree shape. Glue the third handprint on top of the two layered handprints as the top layer of the tree.

Place a foam star on the top of the tree ornament. Then decorate the handprint Christmas tree ornament with pipe cleaner garland, sequins and pom poms.

Next, cut a pipe cleaner in half and shape it into an oval to create a hangar for the ornament. Secure the hanger to the back of the handprint Christmas ornaments, towards the top.

Repeat these steps to make as many trees as you want! Then hang them on your Christmas tree and enjoy your masterpiece!

What else can I use to decorate homemade handprint Christmas ornaments?

If you don’t have some of these supplies, there are plenty of other things to decorate with.

Grab some thin Christmas ribbon to mimic garland and take the place of pipe cleaners. You can use rhinestones and stickers as ornaments on your tree!

You can also use pens and makers and just draw the decorations to exercise that artistic muscle. So many fun ideas and options to choose from!

Pro Tips!

  • You can use green felt as the handprint Christmas tree base if you want! It can make it more malleable and better to decorate for younger children.
  • Strand these ornaments on glittery garland, ribbon, or string to make a DIY Christmas decor garland.
  • Light up your DIY Christmas ornament with a stick on light or even some little fairy lights!
