Ingredients for Frozen Hot Chocolate

  • Milk – I recommend using whole milk for the most thick and creamy results. However, you can also use 2% milk or 1% milk if you’d rather.
  • Chocolate syrup – Grab a bottle of your favorite chocolate syrup to make this delicious frozen drink extra chocolatey. It’s the secret ingredient to making the best flavor for frozen hot cocoa!
  • Hot chocolate mix – You can either use a single packet of hot cocoa mix or measure out the amount needed from a jar of store-bought mix. My easy homemade hot chocolate mix recipe would also work great!
  • Vanilla extract – Vanilla extract in your hot cocoa is the perfect addition to the rich chocolate flavor.
  • Ice cubes – Make a classic hot beverage into a frozen drink by simply blending everything together with ice cubes.

How to Make this Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

  1. To begin, add the ice cubes, milk, hot chocolate mix, vanilla extract and chocolate syrup into a high-powered blender.
  2. Then, blend all of the ingredients together until smooth. You may notice some ice chunks left in the mixture, but it’s ok!
  3. Next, drizzle chocolate syrup around the inside of each serving glass for however many servings of frozen hot cocoa you made.
  4. Pour the frozen hot chocolate into the syrupy glass.
  5. Lastly, top with fresh homemade whipped cream and chocolate curls or other toppings. To make chocolate curls, use a knife or potato peeler on a bar of chocolate.
  6. Serve immediately and enjoy!

What is the difference between a milkshake and frozen hot chocolate?

Milkshakes typically call for ice cream, and this recipe doesn’t. That’s the main difference, and texture is another difference! Frozen hot chocolate is thickened and made cold by ice cubes. The creaminess comes from milk and all of the tasty flavor comes from the hot cocoa mix and chocolate syrup.

What can I add in to my frozen hot cocoa?

If you love mint chocolate, replace the vanilla extract with peppermint extract to make peppermint frozen hot cocoa. You can also top the whipped cream topping with some sprinkles or marshmallows for extra flavor.

Instead of using chocolate syrup in the serving glasses, you can use caramel syrup or even something fruity like strawberry syrup!

Pro Tips!

  • If you don’t have a blender, you can use a food processor to make this recipe. Just keep in mind that it may not blend the ice into chunks as small as a blender would.
  • Make homemade whipped cream for the creamiest and most flavorful topping. The store-bought stuff is good, but homemade has the best flavor and texture!
  • For little kids, try serving each glass with straws and spoons so that they can choose which method they want to eat their frozen hot cocoa.
