What You’ll Need for a Christmas Sun Catcher

  • Tissue Paper – I personally love using festive Christmas colors for this Christmas tree sun catcher, but any color of tissue paper will work.
  • Black Card Stock – Black card stock will help give more structure to your Christmas tree suncatcher, but you could also use black construction paper.
  • Glad Press n’ Seal – This will seal your tissue paper together to create you suncatcher. If you can’t the specific name brand, you can use any transparent adhesive sheets.
  • Ruler – Use a standard ruler as a straight edge to create your Christmas tree shape.
  • Glue Stick – A glue stick or any craft glue will work for this Christmas craft.
  • Scotch Tape – Use scotch tape or any other clear tape to hang your suncatcher on a window.
  • Pencil – Any writing utensil will work, but I like to use pencil so that I can erase if I make mistakes.
  • Scissors – Standard scissors or safety scissors will both work great.

How to Make Christmas Tree Sun Catchers

CREATE: Take your black card stock or construction paper and fold it in half vertically. Then, using your ruler, draw a diagonal line from the top corner of the fold to the edge of the paper. This will create the “triangle” tree shape.

Draw a horizontal line at the bottom and another small vertical line for the trunk.

Then, draw two wavy lines in the middle of your tree.

CUT: Cut out your Christmas tree outline by following the traced lines. Then, carefully cut out the inside portion of your tree, making sure to leave a thick border around the edges.

Take your tissue paper and cut out one inch squares in various different colors and/or patterns.

BUILD: Unfold your Christmas tree and place it onto the center of your work space. Cut out a good sized sheet of Press n’ Seal and lay it sticky side up on top of your Christmas tree. Be sure that it covers the entire tree.

DECORATE: Using the squares of tissue paper, place them in the open center of your Christmas tree outline. Press the tissue paper into the sticky transparent sheet as you go. Make sure to cover the whole tree!

GLUE: Slide your Christmas tree out from underneath the Press n’ Seal and add a layer of glue around the edges. Center the tree over the tissue paper and press down.

CUT: Once the tree is secure, cut the excess Press n’ Seal off of the outer edges.

DISPLAY: Find a window where the sun shines the most and use a piece of tape to hang up your creation!

Fun Tips!

  • If you create a thick enough border, punch a hole in the very top of your tree and add a piece of ribbon! You can then hang your Christmas tree sun catcher on a tree or still hang it in front of a window!
  • If the wavy line is giving you trouble, you can omit it. It’s only there to give a “garland” effect.

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 1 Christmas Tree Suncatcher

Instructions

  • Let’s start by taking the black card stock and folding it in half vertically. Take your ruler and trace a diagonal line to form a triangle. Finish the bottom of the triangle with a short horizontal line. Draw another vertical line for the trunk of the Christmas tree. In the center of the folded triangle, make 2 wavy lines about ½ inch apart. Don’t worry! The lines don’t have to be perfect! This will create the effect of garland on the tree!
  • Next, take your scissors and carefully cut the outer border of your previously traced tree/triangle. Be sure the card stock remains folded evenly. Now taking extra care, cut the inside of the “tree,” leaving a ¼ border around the outside. Be careful to cut around your wavy lines and leave them intact for the “garland” effect.
  • Once you have completed cutting, unfold and lay the tree flat.
  • Grab some assorted tissue paper and cut it into 1-inch squares. Set aside.
  • Now, tear a piece of Press n’ Seal just above the size of your Christmas tree and place it on your work surface sticky side up!
  • Place your Christmas tree under the Press n’ Seal sheet, centering it. Take your previously cut squares of tissue paper and fill in the body of the Christmas tree. The tissue paper squares can overlap. Press all the squares firmly to secure them to the Press n’ Seal.
  • Next, take the Christmas tree and apply a thin layer of glue to the back around the border. Center the tree over the previously affixed tissue paper. Ensure all of the tissue paper shows through and there are no gaps. Press to secure the border onto the sticky Press n’ Seal.
  • Once secure, grab a pair of craft scissors and cut the excess Press n’ Seal around the border of the tree.
  • You are ready to hang your suncatcher with a small piece of adhesive tape! Place it on your favorite window or door for all to enjoy!

Notes

  • If you create a thick enough border, punch a hole in the very top of your tree and add a piece of ribbon! You can then hang your Christmas tree sun catcher on a tree or still hang it in front of a window!
  • If the wavy line is giving you trouble, you can omit it. It's only there to give a "garland" effect.
