Ingredients need for Bottle Rocket Kabobs

  • Strawberries – Cut the top off of strawberries and sort through the oddly shaped ones so that you have strawberries that are perfectly pointed.
  • Large marshmallows – Use the large fluffy marshmallows as the body of the bottle rocket kabobs.
  • Shoestring licorice – If you can’t find shoestring licorice, just use regular twisted licorice and separate each strand.
  • Red and blue food coloring – These are, of course, the most patriotic colors but feel free to use other colors if you want!
  • Water – You’ll use water to make a food coloring mixture that you’ll dye the marshmallows in.
  • Skewers – Be sure you get skewers that are plenty long enough for the entire kabob.

Helpful Tools

How to Make Bottle Rocket Kabobs

  1. Separate the large marshmallows into three groups of 12-13 marshmallows and then set one of the groups aside.
  2. Add 1/4 cup of water into two mixing bowls. Then, add 3-4 drops of red food coloring in one and 3-4 drops of blue food coloring in the other.
  3. Place a marshmallow into the bowl of blue food coloring for 3-4 minutes, rotating to cover every side. Remove the marshmallow and set it on a wire cooling rack with paper towels underneath it.
  4. Repeat this process until all of the marshmallows in that group are dyed blue. Then, use the second group of marshmallows to repeat the process with red food colorig.
  5. Once the marshmallows have been been dyed blue and red, let them dry thoroughly for about an hour.
  6. After they are all dry, take a skewer and poke a hole into the bottom of the red marshmallows. Place 2-3 pieces shoestring licorice in the bottom of the marshmallow.
  7. Push the skewer through the hole with licorice, and push the red marshmallow about halfway down the skewer.
  8. Next, add a white marshmallow onto the skewer until it bumps up against the red one. And then add a blue marshmallow on top of the white one.
  9. Lastly, top the bottle rocket kabob with a strawberry! That’s it, your 4th of July dessert is ready for lift off!

Can I Store Leftover Kabobs?

These don’t keep longer than a day, so they’re not a good make-ahead dessert option. If you need to extend their life a bit, you can keep them in the fridge the day you plan to serve them. But other than that, there’s not a great way to store them.

Why won’t the licorice stick to the marshmallow?

If you’re running into issues getting the licorice strands to stick to the marshmallow, dip the tip of the licorice into water before putting it into the marshmallow. The water should make the marshmallows and licorice a little sticky, helping them stay.

Pro Tips!

  • Make these extra sweet by piping on some frosting in between each marshmallow!
  • You can twirl the licorice with your fingers to get it to stay in place and look a little more uniform on the kabobs.
  • If you’re lucky, you may be able to find red, white, and blue marshmallows in stores! If you see them, grab a bag and you’ll speed up this process quite a bit.
