  • Scissors – If you’re making this craft with littles, make sure to use safety scissors to protect their fingers.
  • Glue stick – A simple school glue stick is all that you need to attach the owl decorations on the sides of the bag.
  • Brown paper bag – Grab a packet of those brown paper lunch bags to make this super cute paper bag owl puppet.
  • Pencil – You’ll need a pencil or pen to trace all of the pieces for this adorable little paper bag owl craft.
  • Colored construction paper – For this craft, you will need yellow, white, black, brown and orange colored construction paper.
  • Markers or crayons – Use some markers or crayons to draw details on the belly of owl to make it look a littl elike feathers.

How to Make this Paper Bag Owl Craft

If you’re using the template, then print it out, cut out the template pieces and then trace the owl’s body parts onto construction paper. You can freehand this step if you would like.

Flatten the paper bag with the bottom flap facing you. This will be the owl’s face. Cut a triangle near the top corner of each flap and flip it up to create the owl’s ears.

Cut a triangle from the yellow construction paper to use for the owl’s beak. Glue it near the center of the flap, pointing downward.

Cut two large circles from white construction paper for the eyes and then use a smaller piece of black paper to make the pupils for the owl’s eyes. The black part of the eye should be pretty large. Glue these onto the white circles and then glue the eyes onto the flap of the paper bag.

Grab a piece of white construction paper and then cut a circle to use as the owl’s belly. Glue it to the front of the bag, below the beak. This completes the owl’s head.

You’re almost done building your owl, just a few more steps to go! Cut 2 owl feet out of orange construction paper and glue them to the bottom of the paper bag.

Lastly, cut two large wing shapes from colored construction paper and glue them onto the sides of the paper lunch bag to create the owl’s wings.

Use markers, crayons, or additional construction paper to add feathers, patterns, or any other decorative elements.

What can I use in place of a paper bag?

A piece of thin cardboard or some thick cardstock could be a great base for your owl in place of a paper bag. You’ll need something that is relatively sturdy, so don’t grab a flimsy piece of paper.

Pro Tips for the MOST Fun!!

  • If you are using this craft for a large group of children, then consider cutting out all of the owl pieces beforehand. Or you could trace them all onto paper and just have the kids cut them out. It will take some steps off of the craft!
  • Don’t be afraid to add extra pizzaz to your owl — every single craft time is meant to let creativity shine! You can use feathers, glitter, buttons, stickers, pom poms, pipe cleaners and so much more.
  • Write names on the back of each paper bag to keep track of who made what owl. After all the owl babies are created, it may be difficult to keep track of whose is whose!
