Handprint Grill Father’s Day Craft

Every year I find myself hunting for a Father’s Day craft that looks impressive without the mess. This Father’s Day handprint grill craft is exactly that. A cute grill made with flames that are my children’s handprints and a hidden message inside for Dad. Under 30 minutes, zero paint, and it’s a keepsake he’ll actually want to keep.

Ask any kid and chances are, their dad loves to grill! It’s like a rite of passage: become a dad, become a grill master. This handprint grill Father’s day craft is perfect for the kids to make this Father’s Day and I’m not exaggerating when I say this one stopped my husband mid-sentence when he opened it.

With the combination of the bright handprint flames fanning out above a black paper grill, the shiny silver spatula, and a hidden note tucked, it looks so much more impressive than the 30 minutes it took to make. And the bonus is that zero paint was involved, which means zero paint on my carpet.

Cut out a grill, add some flames, a spatula, and a hand written message and you’ve got the perfect card and keepsake to celebrate this Father’s Day. All of the materials are most likely already in your craft cupboard for this Father’s Day card craft, so get started!

Supplies Needed

  • Construction paper – Use red, yellow and orange to look like flames. Of course, let the kids use their creative minds when it comes to color!
  • Sharpie marker – Use a regular black marker or pen if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Cardstock – For this craft, use black cardstock to make the lid for the grill and metallic cardstock for the spatula and grill legs. Grey cardstock will work in place of the metallic cardstock if you don’t have any. Cardstock is much sturdier and will hold up better than construction paper for this part of the craft.
  • Scissors – Be sure to help and keep an eye on younger kids using scissors and use kid-size scissors if you have them.
  • Glue stick – Using a glue stick is a mess-free way to glue the craft together.

How To Make Handprint Grill Craft

  1. Make grill base. Fold black cardstock in half horizontally. On the open edge, round the corners to create a soft half-circle shape.
  2. Create flames. Trace your hand onto red, orange, and yellow construction paper. Cut out and set them aside.
  3. Make spatula. On the back of the metallic silver card stock, draw a spatula shape. Cut it out, then use a black marker to draw five thin lines across the top. This little detail is what makes people do a double-take when they first look at the craft.
  4. Make grill legs. Cut two strips from the metallic silver card stock, about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long.
  5. Write message. Fold and trim a piece of white construction paper to fit inside the black grill shape. Glue it to the inside and let it sit for a minute. Write your Father’s Day message using a black marker. Don’t forget to have the kids sign their names!
  6. Add flames. Turn the grill over. Arrange handprints so they fan out like flames and glue them down.
  7. Complete grill. Attach the two metallic strips to the back bottom of the grill to create the legs.
  8. Decorate. Flip the grill back over and glue the spatula to the front of the grill.
  9. Dry. Allow your creation to dry for at least 10 minutes before handling.

Fun Message Ideas

I know most dads love a good pun, so incorporate some grilling puns into your Father’s Day message!

  • “Love, your little grill.”
  • “Dad, you’re grate!”
  • “Have tongs of fun today.”
  • “To the King of the Grill”
  • “It’s no mis-steak, you’re the best dad!”
  • “I grill-y love you!”
  • “You’re the grill master of our hearts!”
  • “You’re a grill-iant dad!”
  • “Well done, Dad. Well done.”

Pro Tips

  • Write the message on the white paper before glueing it onto the black grill section so you don’t have to worry about smudging the glue if it hasn’t completely dried.
  • If you have more than one child, let them each trace their hands on one color and add them together to the grill instead of making several versions of the same card.
  • When making this craft with smaller kids, pre-cut the spatula, grill and note paper and keep their focus on tracing, cutting and glueing the handprints.
  • If a little messy paint doesn’t scare you, have the kids press their painted hands onto white cardstock to create the flames.
