Ingredients for this Edible Playdough Recipe

You only need two ingredients for this activity! How great is that? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • White vanilla frosting – Just grab a can of your favorite vanilla frosting. It doesn’t have to be an expensive brand either, the store-bought is more affordable and will work perfectly.
  • Powdered sugar – Be sure you buy a box or bag of powdered sugar that is 32 oz. You’ll need four cups to make homemade edible playdough.
  • Optional: Food coloring – You don’t have to color your edible playdough, but I recommend you do! It makes it extra fun. I used gel food coloring in this recipe. Choose whatever colors you’d like and have fun!

Helpful Tools

Be sure to clean any playdough toys that you plan to use. You can also use plastic knives, spoons, and bowls as fun toys to play with edible playdough.

How to Make Edible Playdough

Begin by scooping the tub of white frosting into a large mixing bowl.

Then, pour two cups of powdered sugar into the bowl and fold it in with a silicone spatula. The mixture is going to be super sticky, so don’t mix it with your hands just yet.

After those two cups are combined well, add the remaining two cups of powdered sugar and fold it in with the silicone spatula.

Once the mixture starts to firm up and look like dough, you can begin kneading it with your hands. Knead it well until it is no longer sticky.

If you don’t want to color your dough, you can stop here and begin playing! If you do want your edible playdough colored, then keep going.

Divide the dough into equal portions and then drop a few drops of food coloring onto each portion. Knead the sections of dough until the color has been thoroughly mixed in.

Once each color has been added and kneaded in, it’s ready to go!

What can I make with edible playdough?

The possibilities are endless! You can make an “ice cream” cone by placing two balls of dough on top of a sugar cone or waffle cone. Or, you could use cookie cutters to cut shapes out of your dough.

Use your imagination! You can make anything your heart desires with this homemade dough.

Pro Tips

  • Be sure your playing surface is clean! You don’t want your dough to pick up crumbs or debris off of the table when you play. It could end up tasting funny.

  1. I love so many of your recipes, thank you for sharing them. I do have a question about this particular recipe, hiw long can this dough be stored? I am a special education teacher and we make different items usually at least every other week. I just want to make sure that I can inform the parents how to store it so that they don’t have a ball of mold in their child’s backpack 🙂 Thanks again for sharing so many simple crafts and recipes for our students ❤️

    1. Wonderful to hear Janelle! We recommend only storing this playdough for 3-4 days since it’s made with “edible” ingredients!
