I love to have lots of activities for my kids during the spring and summer. When those rainy spring days keep them from playing outside, we make cute things like this paper plate bumble bee craft or print out activity pages like spring color by number. It’s great to have these crafts for extra hot days in the summer time too. You’re going to love how this bumble bee turns out and how simple it is to make. There’s so much fun to be had during craft time!

Why You’ll Love this Bee Handprint Craft

  • Cutting, painting and gluing are all fabulous activities that will help refine fine motor skills. Use craft time to help your littles develop the important skills that they need!
  • This craft is great to use at home and in the classroom. You can create an entire lesson about bees and use this bee craft as a cute personal touch and extra fun. It’s a great way to drive home a lesson!
  • You can complete this whole craft in just 30 minutes. If your busy bee’s can’t stick to one activity for long then this would be a great craft for them.

Supplies Needed

  • Paper plates – No need to use expensive paper plates here. That giant pack of the plain white paper plates that are sold at the grocery store will work great.
  • Yellow paint – Grab a bottle of washable yellow paint. Be sure that it is non-toxic and kid safe!
  • Cardstock – For this bee handprint craft you will need both black and light blue cardstock. If you do not have card stock, you can use construction paper in its place! You can also use black paint to make the black stripes on the bee.
  • Googly eyes – Grab the extra large googly eyes so that they are large enough in proportion to the paper plate body of your bumble bee. Small googly eyes will look too tiny for your adorable handprint bee.
  • Black pen – You’ll need a black pen or a black marker to make a little smile for your adorable bee!
  • Glue stick – A regular school glue stick will work to adhere the paper strips to the paper plate. Feel free to use glue dots if you’d like something that is a bit more mess free with this paper craft.
  • Scissors – Consider using safety scissors, especially if littles are wanting to cut their own materials and wing cutouts.

How to Make this Bee Handprint Craft

  1. Paint a paper plate in yellow paint, ensuring it is fully covered. I recommend using the bottom of the plate so that your bee has a bubble-like shape. Allow the paint to dry completely.
  2. While the paint dries, cut thin strips from the black cardstock. Once the paint is completely dry, begin using the glue stick to glue the black strips across the yellow plate, leaving yellow stripes in between. Be sure to leave at least one strip for the antennae.
  3. Adhere the googly eyes towards the top of the plate and then use the black pen or sharpie to draw simple mouth underneath the eyes. Fold the remaining strip into a V shape and glue it onto the top of the plate. Use your finger or a pencil and curl the top to make antennae.
  4. Trace and cut your child’s hand prints on light blue or heavy white card stock. Then glue the handprints onto the sides of the plate to complete this adorable and easy bee craft! And that’s it — your fun spring craft is ready to go!

Is acrylic paint safe for kids?

Generally most acrylic paint is non-toxic. If you’d like to be extra cautious, just grab paint in the kids crafting section or read the labels of what you’re buying to ensure it is safe for kids to use.

What to use if I don’t have a paper plate

If you don’t have any paper plates on hand, then cut a large circle out of yellow cardstock or white card stock that you can color yellow! You could also cut a circle out of cardboard and then paint it yellow. Anything that is sturdy enough to hold the googly eyes, stripes and handprint wings will work.

Pro Tips for the Best Paper Plate Bumble Bee Craft

  • To save some time on this paper plate activity, you can always buy plates that are already colored yellow. Then you wouldn’t need to have paint or use that extra ten minutes of time to paint the plate. Colored plates are a great resource!
  • This bee craft for kids can be customized however you want. Add some glitter or glitter glue to the body of the bee, or on the little hands for wings. You can use some pink paint or a marker to make little blush spots on the bee. And instead of a curved strip of paper, you could use a pipe cleaner as an antenna!
  • You do not need a lot of paint to make the plate bee template. Too much paint will make the paper plate pretty flimsy. So make sure that you don’t overload it!
