Kids are always picking things up on adventure walks, so why not put the sticks they bring home to good use and make DIY suncatchers with beads! Once they’ve chosen a stick, head home and open the craft cupboard where I am sure you’ve already got everything you need!

Younger kids will work on their fine motor skills while older kids can use their creativity as well as help out the little kids with cutting and stringing beads. Making suncatchers with beads is a great rainy day activity or you can take the kids outside to enjoy making these in the sun.

Every window can use a little color and the kids will be so proud and happy to hang these in their bedroom windows. If you are making these close to a specific holiday, you can even use beads that are typically colored for that holiday like red, green and white for Christmas.

Why you’ll love this craft

  • Kids can use their own creative imaginations to string together the fun colored beads for these suncatchers.
  • Stringing the beads helps children with their fine motor development.
  • The kids can get some fresh air when they go out looking for the perfect stick to hang their beads from.

Supplies needed for Beaded Suncatchers

  • Twine – This is a good string to use with the beads because it is nice and thick, kids will have an easier time using it. You can also use fishing line so that the beads look like they are floating!
  • Stick – A sturdier stick will hang well but choose whatever size you like!
  • Ruler – This will ensure your strings are long enough.
  • Scissors – Safety scissors are fine if there are young children making this craft.
  • Plastic needle – This is an optional supply that can help to string the beads.
  • Pony beads – Translucent pony beads and multi-color plastic beads will look terrific with the sun shining through them! Older kids can use glass beads, too.

How to make Beaded Suncatchers

  • Prepare the base by cutting a piece of twine about 16 inches long. Tie the twine to each end of the stick to create a loop for hanging.
  • Cut multiple pieces of string to a length of 12–18 inches each, adjusting based on how long you want your sun catcher to be.
  • Thread the beads onto each string using the plastic needle. Leave a small section of string at the top for tying.
  • Securely tie the ends of each beaded strand to the stick, spacing them evenly across the stick. Ensure the knots are tight so the strings don’t slip.
  • Once you have attached the strings, trim off the extra thread and place the sun catcher where it will catch plenty of sunlight, such as a bright window or an outdoor space.

How to make it your own

Add a charm or two, use glass beads or crystals – whatever has a small hole that a string can go through will be perfect! Head to the local dollar store or craft store and see what other objects you can find.

How to use a beaded suncatcher

Choose the most sunny window in your home and hang your beaded suncatcher by the long string handle you created. A great way to hang these on your window is with suction cup hooks.
These will also be so much fun to hang in your kiddos playhouse in the yard!
