If you need an easy sweet treat for the 4th of July this is your recipe. The kids will devour of them and love getting in the kitchen to mix and bake this easy cookie recipe.

Plus, they freeze great so you can just pull them out of the freeze, thaw and serve at all your patriotic parties if you want to make them ahead of time.

What ingredients do I need for 4th of July Cookies?

  • Butter – Make sure it’s softened so it’s easy to mix in.
  • Sugar – You’ll need a mixture of brown & granulated sugar.
  • Flour – Use regular all-purpose flour. Make to measure it correctly.
  • Vanilla – Using pure vanilla extract will give you the best flavor.
  • Cornstarch – Gives the cookies a soft consistency that is thick.
  • Baking soda – Helps your cookies raise.
  • Salt – Evens out the sweetness in the cookies.
  • Chocolate chips – Using mini chocolate chips give you tons of chocolate flavor in each bite.
  • M&M’s – We used Red, White and Blue but you can use any M&Ms you’d like!

How to Make Patriotic M&M Cookies!

These M&M cookies are so easy to make. They will be a hit at every party, great for the freezer or to make just because. Just change up your M&Ms for different occasions!

First line cookie sheet with parchment paper, set aside.

Then in the bowl of a stand mixer, cream butter and sugars until smooth. Add in egg and vanilla, beat until thoroughly combined.

In a separate medium mixing bowl whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt.

With the mixer on low, slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until just combined.

Using a rubber spatula fold in mini chocolate chips and M&M’s.

Using a cookie scoop, form balls about 2 tablespoons in size. Place cookies on prepared cookie sheet and repeat until all the dough has been used. Cover cookie sheet with plastic wrap.

Place the cookie sheet in the freezer for 1 hour.

Then preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove cookies from freezer. Space the cookies evenly on the cookie sheet. Bake cookies for 12 minutes, cookie should appear slightly under baked.

Press extra M&M’s into the cookies. We used 3-4 M&Ms per cookie. This is optional and for presentation.

Allow cookies to cool on cookie sheet for 5 minutes, transfer to a cooling rack.

How should I store cookies?

Store cookies in an airtight container for 1 week.

Can I eat these warm or cold?

These are delicious served warm with a glass of milk, however room temperature are delicious too!

Can I freeze M&M Cookies?

You can absolutely make this ahead of time.  You can make the dough and form into balls, and freeze.  Or make the dough ahead of time and place it in the refrigerator.

Another option is to bake them and freeze them in an airtight container. They will last in the freezer for up to three months.

What size cookie scoop should I use?

I used a small cookie scoop, about 1 tablespoon in size.

You do not need to use a cookie scoop, you can easily use two spoons to form the balls. Or you can use your hands to roll it into balls.

What if I don’t have parchment paper?

You can spray the cookies sheet with baking spray if you don’t have parchment paper.

What other variations I can make?

These are easily customizable to various holidays, you could use red & green for Christmas or pastels for Easter, black & orange for Halloween.  Or use regular M&Ms for everyday!

Option to leave out the chocolate chips and only use the M &M’s or only use chocolate chips. Mix it up with white chocolate chips too!

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
