Halloween Snack Mix Ingredients

Ingredients

  • Chex cereal – any flavor will work for this recipe!
  • Bugles – The original flavor or caramel flavored Bugles work best.
  • Pretzels – Try twist pretzels or mini pretzels.
  • Melted butter – You can melt it in the microwave or in a small saucepan on the stove.
  • Brown sugar – This gives the butter coating a touch of sweetness. It pairs great with the salty snacks.
  • Vanilla extract – Just a little adds the perfect amount of flavor.
  • Halloween Candy – I use a mix of Reese’s Pieces, candy corn, candy pumpkins, mint M&Ms, and candy eyes.

Other Mix In Ideas

What I love best about this recipe is that you can swap out ingredients or add other mix ins to change it up! Here are some ideas you can mix and match:

  • Salty snacks: Mini cheese crackers, different flavored pretzels, or different kinds of Chex cereal.
  • Candy: Try Halloween M&Ms, peanut M&Ms, mini Reese’s peanut butter cups, toffee bits, mini Rolos, or other mini chocolate candies.
  • Other mix ins: Chopped nuts, chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, peanut butter chips, or other baking chips that go with the theme are great, too!

How to Make Fall Chex Mix

Line the baking sheet with parchment or foil and coat it with cooking spray.

Mix the cereal, Bugles, and pretzels in a large mixing bowl.

In a small mixing bowl, combine the melted butter, sugar, and vanilla.

Slowly pour the butter mixture over the cereal mixture while stirring so all of it is evenly coated.

Spread the mixture on the prepared baking sheet and bake it for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through the baking time.

Allow the cereal mixture to cool to room temperature.

Once it’s cooled, transfer it to a large mixing bowl and add all of the candy. Stir to combine and it’s ready to serve!

How to Store Halloween Snack Mix

Store the mix in an airtight container and it will keep well for up to two weeks at room temperature.

You can also freeze it! This is great if you are trying to get ahead on party planning. You can make and bake the snack mix, let it cool, and then freeze it for several months. Thaw it at room temperature and then stir in the candy.

Do you have to bake Chex mix?

For the best snack mix, you will want to bake it. The sugar and butter coating transforms the snack mix into a toasted, crunchy snack. If you skip this step, the coating will just make the snack mix soggy.

Tips for the Best Chex Mix!

  • Have your sheet pan prepared and ready to go so when you coat the mixture you can pop it in the oven right away.
  • This recipe makes eight cups of snack mix – you can easily double or triple it if you want to make more.
  • Wait until the mix is cooled to add the candy – if you add it while it’s warm, the candy will melt.
