Ingredients for this Chocolate Chip Pancakes Recipe

  • Flour – Grab the all-purpose flour in your pantry as the base ingredient for this pancake mixture. Feel free to try out an all purpose gluten free flour if you want to make these without gluten.
  • Baking powder – This is what makes your pancakes rise, so be sure you remember to mix it in!
  • Sugar – You can add more or less sugar depending on how sweet you like your pancakes. Keep in mind that the mini chocolate chips will add sweetness too.
  • Salt – If you use unsalted butter then add 1/2 tsp of salt to your chocolate chip pancake batter.
  • Egg – For best results, allow the egg to come to room temperature before mixing with the other ingredients.
  • Milk – Any type of milk will work, but I prefer to use whole milk. 2% or skim milk will also work and you can even use a dairy-free substitute like almond milk or oat milk.
  • Butter – We use salted butter in this chocolate chip pancake recipe, but you can also use unsalted.
  • Chocolate chips – Mini or regular chocolate chips work perfectly. You can use dark chocolate chips, semi-sweet, milk chocolate chips or any other kind you want.

How to Make Chocolate Chip Pancakes

  1. Start by sifting the dry ingredients into a large bowl. Then grab a second mixing bowl and whisk the egg until it is light and fluffy. Then add 1 cup of milk and the melted butter to the egg and stir to combine.
  2. Combine the wet ingredients and dry pancake ingredients and stir until a smooth batter forms. A few lumps are ok, and be careful that you don’t over mix.
  3. Add the chocolate chips to the batter and gently fold to combine. Now you’re ready to cook them!
  4. Heat griddle or skillet over medium-low heat. Melt about 1/2 Tbsp butter in a large non-stick skillet.
  5. Ladle about 1/4 cup of the chocolate chip pancake batter on the skillet making 3-4 pancakes.
  6. Cook pancakes until bubbles form on top then flip and cook until golden brown the other side.
  7. Serve with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

When do I add chocolate chips to pancake batter?

There are differing opinions on this. Some people add them right into the batter, others sprinkle the pancakes with chocolate chips after pouring the batter into the skillet.

There’s pros and cons to each so just use whatever method is best for you! I prefer to fold them into the batter. If you have issues with the chocolate chips sinking, just toss them in a little flour before folding into the batter.

Keep in mind that if you sprinkle the batter with chocolate chips after adding the batter to the skillet, sometimes the chocolate chip might burn a little when you flip it.

How to Keep pancakes warm

Making an extra large batch of these pancakes? Then use this tip so that the first few rounds of cooked pancakes don’t get cold!

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees. Lay finished pancakes on a baking sheet and place in the oven to keep warm. Don’t cover them with foil or they will become limp.

How to Store Chocolate Chip Pancakes

Before storing any pancakes, ensure that they have cooled completely to room temperature. If you store them when they are still hot it creates condensation on the pancakes that will make them soggy and they won’t reheat well.

REFRIGERATION: After your pancakes have cooled to room temperature, wrap them in aluminum foil or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Leftover pancakes will keep in the fridge for up to a week.

FREEZER: Before you store pancakes make sure you let them cool to room temperature. Then you can either flash freeze them by placing the cooled pancakes in a single layer on a baking sheet, then and freezing them for 1-2 hours and transferring to a freezer Ziploc bag or airtight container. Another way to store them in the freezer is in individual sandwich bags or by placing them in a gallon freezer storage bag. They’ll need to be separated by parchment paper to keep from sticking together.

How to Reheat Pancakes

If you have a lot to reheat place, then place the pancakes onto a baking sheet, cover lightly with foil and bake at 350 degrees F for about 10 minutes or until warmed through.

You can also place pancakes on a microwavable plate, do not stack them. Microwave them for 10-15 seconds or until warmed through.

How to Reheat Frozen Chocolate Chip Pancakes

You can warm frozen pancakes in the microwave for about 20 seconds. If you add more than one pancake add an additional 5-10 seconds for each pancake to reheating time. We have been known to throw ours in the toaster to if you like them a bit crispy on the outside.

Best Pancake Toppings

I think kids love pancake toppings even more than pancakes! I mean, what’s not to love. There’s so many fun options to choose from:

What to Serve with Chocolate Chip Pancakes

This kid-friendly breakfast pairs great with other kid favorites like scrambled eggs and bacon! If you need something extra easy, then make this sheet pan breakfast to pair with your pancakes.

Pro Tips for the Best Chocolate Chip Pancake Recipe

  • It is important not to over mix the pancake batter. — a few lumps are fine! Pancakes also often turn out better when the batter rests a bit, so just let it rest while you warm the pan or griddle.
  • We recommend serving your pancakes with warm syrup, so that cold syrup doesn’t cool off your warm pancakes.
  • Bubbles will form and burst on the pancakes when they are ready to flip. Be patient after adding the batter to the griddle. Don’t flip them before bubbles come to the surface and burst or you will have chocolate chip pancakes that are undercooked and heavy.
  • The perfect pancakes start with a pan that is the right temperature. My best trick is to flick just a bit of water on the grill. If it immediately sizzles, then I’ll start with a small test pancake.

These fluffy homemade pancakes are sure to be a hit with everyone in the family. What’s not to love about a classic breakfast favorite that is loaded with gooey chocolate chips? If you like these then you’ve gotta check out my chocolate pancakes too!
