Total Time: 2 hours 40 minutes
Servings: 15 ornaments

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cinnamon
  • 1 cup apple sauce
  • Glue and puffy paint optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 200°F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the cinnamon and apple sauce until it starts to form a ball. If the mixture is very crumbly, you might need to add an extra tablespoon of apple sauce to help it develop the ball.
  • Place the dough in the middle of a piece of parchment paper and top it with another. Roll it out to be a quarter-inch thick.
  • Using cookie cutters, cut out the shapes of the ornaments, making sure to wiggle the cutter back and forth to separate it from the dough. Using a straw, add a hole to the top of the ornament.
  • Place the cookies on the sheet pan and bake for two and a half hours until they are hardened.
  • Remove from oven and let cool.
  • Tie a piece of twine or ribbon on each ornament.
  • If you want, you can decorate the ornament to look like gingerbread cookies using glue or puffy paint.

Notes

How do I store cinnamon ornaments?
Store them wrapped in tissue paper in an airtight container safely away from too hot temperatures. I don’t recommend storing these in your garage if you live in a hot area.
How long will these last?
If they’re stored correctly, they can potentially last for years on end. I have a set of these that I made when I was about seven years old. Now inevitably, like any other ornament, they are fragile, so a few might break here and there.
What is puffy paint, and where do I get it?
Puffy paint is what I use to decorate my ornaments. It is a craft paint that isn’t thin, so it does not spread a lot. I find this looks most like royal icing on a gingerbread cookie. You can get it at any craft store or right here on Amazon.
What is twine?
Twine is a thicker string that has a very rustic look to it. If you want, you can also string these ornaments up with a thin ribbon. I just personally like the look of the twine with these ornaments. I found mine here on Amazon.
