We will start by cutting our paper plates. With a pair of scissors, cut triangles around the entire outer edge of the plate.
Next, cut a piece of yellow tissue paper into a 12 x 12-inch square. Spread glue evenly onto the paper plate and press the sheet of tissue paper onto the plate. Smooth out the wrinkles and ensure the tissue paper is secured to the plate.
Take your scissors and cut the tissue paper along the outline of your previously cut plate. Set aside to dry for at least 5 minutes.
While you wait for the paper plate and tissue paper to dry, let’s prepare the “seeds” for your sunflower. Take a piece of black tissue paper and get it into about 2 x 2-inch squares.
Once the plate and tissue paper are dry, spread a 5-inch diameter circle of glue thinly. Take each 2 x 2-inch square, crumple it, and press it to the glue. Repeat this step filling the circle with “seeds.”
Now let’s bring this sunflower to life! Add googly eyes, cut about 3 inches of a green pipe cleaner, and affix it with glue for a cute smile. Allow drying for a few minutes to make sure the smile is secure.
Let’s add the stem for our sunflower! Add glue to the jumbo green wooden craft stick and carefully press it to the backside of the paper plate. Set aside and allow to dry for at least 5 minutes.
Lastly, twist the remaining portion of your previously cut green pipe cleaner around the center of the green wooden craft stick to create “arms.”
Notes
If you are creating this craft with toddlers, you might find precutting the items will reduce the time of this activity.
