Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 5 minutes
Resting Time: 3 hours
Total Time: 3 hours 20 minutes
Servings: 16 Rice Krispie Bars

Ingredients

  • 16 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal
  • 2 Cups Mini Marshmallows
  • 2 Packs Purple Peeps
  • 2 Packs Pink Peeps
  • 2 Packs Blue Peeps
  • 12 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
  • Nonstick Cooking Spray
  • Purple Food Coloring optional

Instructions

  • Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Place each color of peeps in their own large mixing bowl. Place the mini marshmallows in their own mixing bowl as well.
  • Add 3 tablespoons of butter to each of the four bowls.
  • Add the purple bowl to the microwave and heat on high for 1 minute and 15 seconds.
  • Stir well until no color streaks appear. If you want a brighter or more prominent purple, add a couple drops of the food dye here.
  • Immediately pour 4 cups rice cereal into the bowl and mix until the marshmallow is evenly distributed.
  • Quickly pour into the prepared pan. Spread the mixture until it’s evenly across the bottom of the pan and press down to pack it in.
  • Repeat steps 4-7 with the pink, white, and blue, in that order.
  • Cover the pan and let it rest for 3 hours or until the treats have dried enough to be cut and not be overly gooey.

TIPS

  • Use fresh marshmallow peeps for this recipe. If they are stale, your treats won’t be as good.
  • Once you’ve melted the marshmallow peeps, work fast to mix in the cereal and press it into the pan. I usually do the melting and stirring and my kiddos help press the mixture into the dish.
  • To make it easy to press the mixture into the pan, lightly coat your hands with cooking spray.
  • If your baking dish is more narrow at the bottom than at the top, you may need to work the cereal mixture so you get an even layer. The easiest way is to break off small pieces of the mixture and move them around to get an even layer.
  • This recipe makes thick treats so if you prefer thinner ones, you don’t have to do different colors – one solid color looks great or do two or three layers.
  • If you make thinner treats, you can slice them into squares or use cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes!
  • For more festive fun, mix sprinkles or Easter candy into the cereal mixture or add sprinkles on top before the bars set!

I DON’T HAVE A MICROWAVE. CAN YOU MAKE PEEPS TREATS ON THE STOVE?

Yes, you can use the stove to make them. Melt the peeps and butter in a pot or large saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir often until the mixture is melted.
Add the cereal and press the mixture into the pan. You will need to wipe out the pot before you do the next layer so the colors don’t get combined.

WHY ARE MY PEEPS RICE KRISPIE TREATS SO GOOEY?

Did you let them set for at least a few hours at room temperature? If you try to slice them right away they will be too gooey and may not hold together.
