Potato Stamp Easter Eggs on white paper

During Easter we always have so much fun dying Easter eggs, but it’s fun to do something a little different each year too!

That’s why I loved this craft that turned a simple potato into an Easter egg stamp. You can make Easter Egg Dyed Potatoes as a fun Easter activity too!

When we made this painting, we layered a plain potato stamp with the Easter egg potato stamp for a more colorful version, but you can just use the cut out potato stamp too. Each kid had a blast choosing their own color palette for their art and even used construction paper in different colors for their backgrounds.

This is an easy spring craft to do at home or in the classroom. If you cut the potato stamps before hand it’s relatively quick and easy to do this art project!

Supplies Needed

How to Make Easter Egg Potato Stamp

Make sure you have an oblong potato and it it in half the longways across the potato. If you use a round potato you’ll end up with more of a circle stamp than an Egg stamp.

Carve the design you would like into one half of the potato with a pairing knife. Cut on an angle on both sides of the line to make it stand out. You can carve your choice of line, zig-zags, and dots to make your Easter egg design.

Stamp the Potato

Pour your main color paint onto the paint plate. Dip your non carved half of the potato into the paint. Stamp the egg shape all over the paper and allow it to dry.

Use any color of paper you want to make it fun! Each child can pick their favorite color of paper to let their personality shine.

Stamp the Easter Egg Potato Stamp!

Using the paintbrush, paint the colors onto the carved potato. You want to use the paint sparingly. If you get to much paint on the potato stamp it will blend together and not show your stamp design.

Stamp on top of the egg shapes on the paper.

Can these stamps be reused?

You can rinse them off and make lots of new art with them. They will last about two days in the fridge wrapped in plastic wrap until they start to get soft.

My Easter eggs seem more like balls. What am I doing wrong?

You want to make sure you are using an oval-shaped potato. I tried one that seemed oval, but it was too round once it was cut.

What are the tips for getting the best print?

You don’t want to use too much paint is the key to a good print. If there are globs of paint, it will smudge.

Can you make this was washable paint?

Yes, you can use washable paint or acrylic paint.
